10 Cheap Things To Do This Memorial Day Weekend


Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer, and if you’re still figuring out how to spend your long weekend, take a look at these inexpensive events happening throughout the city:

1.) GO TO THE BEACH
 – FREE
Lake Michigan’s plentiful beaches officially open Friday, May 25. Grab a towel and tan that pale winter skin away! Most of Chicago’s beaches have lifeguards on duty from 11am – 7pm. For more information, check out the Chicago Park District’s website.

 2.) CHICAGO’S ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY PARADE – FREE
 Feeling especially patriotic this Memorial Day? Head downtown Saturday, May 26 for the annual Wreath Laying Ceremony and Memorial Day Parade. CIA Director David Patraeus will act as Grand Marshal of the celebration, which runs along State Street between Lake and Van Buren. For more information, click here.

3.) FIREWORKS AT NAVY PIER – FREE

 4.) SHAUN OF THE DEAD VS DAWN OF THE DEAD – FREE
In a nod to their former life as a second-run movie theater, Lincoln Hall occasionally screens a double-feature on their stage. On Friday, May 25th, the venue will be screening Shaun AND Dawn of the Dead, because nothing says “America” like the zombie apocalypse. Did we mention they have $5 burgers and $3 Bud drafts/Rolling Rock cans? The first movie starts at 7pm.

 5.) BELMONT-SHEFFIELD MUSIC FESTIVAL – $5 SUGGESTED DONATION
Located on Sheffield between Belmont and School, this two day street festival features live music, bountiful food, refreshing beverages, and handmade curios. Some musical highlights include Our Name is Jonas and School of Rock. There is a suggested $5 donation at the festival entrance. All proceeds go to the Central Lakeview Merchants Association.

 6.) WINDY CITY SOUL CLUB – $5 COVER
Say thanks to the troops by shakin’ your tail feather at Windy City Soul Club. This monthly event has become a staple for Chicago dance enthusiasts since it began in 2008. Head on over to The Empty Bottle on Saturday, May 26 and bust a move as DJs spin Mo-town, Soul, and everything in between!

 7.) ANOTHER 90’s PARTY – FREE WITH RSVP
If the swinging 60’s aren’t quite your style, why not lace up your Air Jordans and head on over to Beauty Bar for their monthly homage to the last decade of the 20th century. Another 90’s Party features $3 Old Style tall boys and $2 jello shots, along with an arsenal of hairstylists ready to give you the perfect 90’s do. There is no cover from 9pm-10pm when you RSVP online here. This month’s theme has yet to be announced, but with a list including Pulp Fiction and SLC Punk, we can’t wait to see what they have in store for May!

8.) OLD TOWN AL FRESCO – PRICES VARY

9.) RANDOLPH STREET MARKET – $3+
Antiques and independent boutiques sit side by side at the Randolph Street Market. This urban bazaar kicks off it’s 2012 season Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27. Admission varies in price, but starts as low as $3 for advance student tickets. Some notable reasons to stop by this market include a free furniture delivery service for customers living in the city, a vinyl swap meet, pet friendly outdoor area, and an onsite antique appraisal service! 10.) RED, WHITE & BAR-B-Q – FREE
